India protesters demand justice over rape, murder of trainee doctor

Medics across India demand justice and safety

after a trainee doctor is raped and murdered

"We demand that the authorities complete their investigation and arrest the culprits immediately. It has been 48 hours since the incident occurred and we are not interested in baseless rumours around the case. The police must keep working and they should give us a report of their investigation."

"We will keep protesting until our demands are met. The main demands are: there must be a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the matter, as regional officials are not paying attention to the incident. The Central Protection Act must be mandated, and the real culprits must be arrested."

Police had found the victim's body in a seminar hall of the R.G. Kar Medical College on Friday (August 9) morning after she was sexually assaulted and murdered the night before, local media reported.

Doctors, nurses and medics took part in widespread protests in Kolkata, Lucknow, Chandigarh and New Delhi.

They were seen marching, chanting and participating in seated demonstrations outside university hospitals, holding signs expressing their anger and frustrations.

Many of the protesters demanded the intervention of the country's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case.

West Bengal State Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday the principal of the R.G. Kar Medical College has resigned. She also gave police a deadline until Sunday (August 18) to arrest the suspect, and if not, will hand over the case to the CBI.
