A woman is dead after being hit by a car early Christmas morning in Rockford, authorities said.
Just before 6 a.m., authorities were called to the 3200 block of Gilbert Avenue for reports of an unresponsive woman lying in the street.
The woman was pronounced dead on scene by authorities.
The Rockford Police Department determined the woman was hit by a vehicle and are now investigating the incident as a hit and run. There's no description of the vehicle in question at this time.
The name of the 48-year-old woman will be released once family is notified.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
