Joe Maddon “Hoping to At Least Interview” for New York Mets Managerial Job

Joe Maddon and the Los Angeles Angels parted ways in June of last year amid a brutal stretch for the Angels, and Maddon did not manage in the 2023 season. But that doesn’t mean he’s finished in baseball.

Maddon, now 69, is reportedly still very much wanting to manage in the big leagues.

From USA Today: “Joe Maddon wants to manage again, and is telling friends he’d love to manage the Mets, and is hoping to at least interview for the opening.”

It’s not altogether surprising to hear that Maddon wants back in a manager’s seat. He’s done it for the better part of two decades, with much more success than failure. It’s also not surprising that Maddon would welcome a call from the New York Mets, as he is not one to shy away from the spotlight.

Given how Maddon’s tenure with Angels ended – there were some fundamental disagreements on how a manager’s role relates to the information the front office provides – it remains to be seen if he’d be considered a candidate by a David-Stearns-led managerial search. Still, the guy was wildly successful with the Tampa Bay Rays and then with the Chicago Cubs, and I’d think you might at least want to talk to him.

I’d be very surprised if Maddon winds up the guy for the Mets right now, but if Craig Counsell decides he doesn’t want to leave Milwaukee, then the Mets managerial race is wide open.
